Listen Up! Speak Up! From Troublemaker to Teacher of the Year and Trainer I'm different from your average communication skills educator, expert, or corporate trainer. Not only do I understand the psychology and neuroscience around communication, I've gotten into lots of trouble because of my direct communication style. My curiosity was perceived as disrespectful in middle school, and I talked too much. I'll always remember my 7th-grade year. The school principal put together a parent-teacher conference with all of my teachers that I had attended, along with my parents. While most teachers discussed my behavior, my science teacher provided a different perspective. He mentioned that he didn't see it the way they saw it. He said that I was a leader and that what they should be doing is discussing ways to cultivate my leadership skills. Looking back, his courage to be the lone voice, engage in critical listening skills, and reframe changed the trajectory of my life. I taught my very first Speech and Debate class over 20 years. When I won "Teacher of the Year." I reflected on his advocacy for me and knew I would continue to do the same for my students. I also leveraged my skills by working in staff development and becoming a trainer. Practical communication skills benefit everyone! How can becoming an effective listener help you think critically and solve problems? How could listening help you to become aware of perceptual biases? How could you leverage your voice to help you to help others? How could leveraging your voice help you to help yourself? How could other people benefit from knowing your story, knowledge, experience, and subject-matter expertise? I have helped others to achieve tremendous success by leveraging their communication skills.
